LION received six Oscar nominations at the 89th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Dev Patel), Best Supporting Actress (Nicole Kidman) and Best Adapted Screenplay. It tells the extraordinary true story of a young Indian boy who gets lost on a train which takes him thousands of kilometres from home. He survives many challenges before being adopted by a couple in Australia. Twenty five years later, armed with only a handful of memories and Google Earth he sets out to find his lost family.

Lion is based on the non-fiction book A Long Way Home by Saroo Brierley. The title is drawn from his original name, Sheru, which means lion in Hindi. “The trajectory started in my mind. It became a documentary, then a book and now a film. I guess I’ve been pushing it in as many ways as possible”.

Google helped the production and gave the crew access to their satellite imagery to use in the film, providing them with versions of Google Earth from the correct time period.
