‘Gods Own Country’- post film discussion 20 Jan 2023

A lively discussion with 16 participants took place after the evening performance of this gritty but tender film.

The conversation ranged widely. We talked about the interaction between the characters, landscape, weather and animals. We discussed how the two men’s relationship developed in this lonely, wild setting, growing from visceral emotion to tenderness. We explored the story of trying to keep the family farm, and themselves, afloat in a modern world.
It was interesting to discuss the Director’s use of the camera and script, as well as how he managed the authenticity of the actors’ performances.

Follow the link below to an interview with the director Francis Lee and the Romanian actor Alex Secareanu.
Broader themes were discussed around acceptance of difference in a rural setting, visual-spiritual references, loneliness, the love story between the two men, and ultimately the question as to whether it was a hopeful film. All agreed that it was a beautiful film.

November 2020 News

After considerble thought and planning we have decided that Topsham Film Society’s new season of twelve films will start on Friday 18th December with a wonderful film The Personal History of David Copperfield.

In these unpredictable times many film societies have cancelled their seasons altogether. This was an option we considered but there was extremely positive feedback from attendees at our trial film screenings in October. The Covid safety measures put in place were praised and the opportunity to watch a film with other people during this difficult period was very much appreciated.

TFS 2023-24 Season

End of Season

The 2023-24 season has now finished.

The Topsham Film Society (TFS) was established in 2004 and has shown more than 200 films. It is run on a not-for-profit basis for the benefit of the local community by a committee of volunteers.
We show films in Matthews Hall on two Fridays each month during a season that usually runs from October to March and includes a minimum of 12 films.

Films shown include; contemporary, classic, foreign language, and local interest films. There are two screenings of each film; matinees begin at 3pm and all films (including those in English) are subtitled, and evening showings begin at 7.30pm.

A list of films screened by TFS can be found by clicking the More Info tab and selecting the relevant archive.

The next season begins on Friday 4th October 2024. Information about the films in the 2024-25 programme and a membership application form can be found on this website from August onwards.
