‘Gods Own Country’- post film discussion 20 Jan 2023
A lively discussion with 16 participants took place after the evening performance of this gritty but tender film.
The conversation ranged widely. We talked about the interaction between the characters, landscape, weather and animals. We discussed how the two men’s relationship developed in this lonely, wild setting, growing from visceral emotion to tenderness. We explored the story of trying to keep the family farm, and themselves, afloat in a modern world.
It was interesting to discuss the Director’s use of the camera and script, as well as how he managed the authenticity of the actors’ performances.
Follow the link below to an interview with the director Francis Lee and the Romanian actor Alex Secareanu.
Broader themes were discussed around acceptance of difference in a rural setting, visual-spiritual references, loneliness, the love story between the two men, and ultimately the question as to whether it was a hopeful film. All agreed that it was a beautiful film.
